CASE STUDY - Toronto Pearson International Airport

Background
A vibrant, modern city’s major international airport, Toronto Pearson International Airport, is home to a future forward SAM System firetruck. Many airports can be compared to a small to mid-sized city. However, Pearson International Airport boasts 3 fire stations, 10 square miles, 100 employees, 1,000 trainees annually, and 50+ million passengers per year. The Pearson Fire Department responds to over 6,000 calls per year. Because the fire department is housed within an airport, team members respond to a myriad of calls including structural fires, confined space responses, medical calls, symptom relief, and more. .
Challenge
The cold, damp Canadian winters in Toronto frequently expose all vehicles to snow, sleet, and salt. Due to corrosion, the Pearson Fire Department put out an RFP in 2022 for a new front-line engine. During this process, Leonard Sanders, the Division Chief of Planning & Support, became aware of SAM. Initially the team was skeptical as they were used to mechanical levers and feared it could add complication. Longevity was a concern, too. Pearson’s previous engines encountered issues due to lack of maintenance, so Sanders was hoping to avoid preventable issues when purchasing a new truck.

Solution
SAM simplifies both pumping operations and fleet maintenance. Sanders was happy to discover that SAM automatically runs diagnostic tests to detect and prevent valve failures. After receiving the engine, the department was further impressed by SAM’s ability to self-prime for drafting and open the master intake valves once the system senses inflow. Further, Sanders noted that “The SAM system frees up one of our staff members to set and open lines.”
Results
When seconds count, SAM makes every call faster and safer. During aircraft rescue situations, SAM has had the biggest impact as usually only one engine is able to respond. Having SAM frees up a staff member and saves vital time. Sanders noted “The efficiency SAM brings to emergency scenes is phenomenal.” Further, Sanders is impressed with how SAM improves safety for firefighters and protects the apparatus itself through regular self-diagnostic tests. Chief Sanders did not parse words when he said any department would be “making a big mistake” by not considering SAM.
